Hello there! Welcome to Italy Nerd. This is a place where I share what I have learned from time spent in Italy.
If you are interested in off-the-beaten track Italy, you are in the right place. You can learn tips from locals about their beautiful country, cultural insights, and things that might make your next trip to Italy even more unforgettable.
While I love cities like Rome and Florence that are at the top of most people’s itineraries, my heart belongs to the smaller spaces, off the beaten track, and away from the must-see monuments and museums. In fact, my home-base when I travel is in Lecce and my travel extends from there.
About Me
Nerd /nərd/ noun
- a person who is boringly studious. ex. “one of those nerds who never asked a girl to dance”
- a person who is extremely interested in one subject and knows a lot of facts about it. ex. “a computer nerd”
It turns out, am the very definition of a nerd when it comes to anything Italian (the country, the language, the food, modern history, ancient history, current events…). Not a day passes when you don’t hear me say something like “that’s just like in Italy/Italian where <insert random fact that could be related to the discussion that my interlocutor didn’t actually care to know>!” If it happens in front of my son, it will be pointed out that I am, in fact, “…such a nerd.” I choose to believe it is said with affection.
The word for “nerd” in Italian is “secchione (m.) /secchiona (f.)”
I’m also kind of a art nerd, and if I’m sitting, I’m probably also drawing. So, scattered throughout the blog, you’ll find sketches and doodles I’ve made while waiting for buses, hanging out in piazzas, and riding trains.
